Current Computer Systems

Main System:

Built by me as a game/3D design/general purpose computer.

Spec:

.Asus A8V Deluxe MainBoard .160Gb Maxtor DiamondMax Hard Drive
.1Gb DDR400 Elixir Ram in Dual Channel Mode .Asus 54mb WiFi card
.AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 512kb cache CPU (OC@2.2Ghz) .Creative SBlive! Value Sound Card
.Saphire Radeon X800 Pro 256mb AGP Graphics, running standard clock rate .Hyper 580W blue anodised PSU
.Philips DVDRW Dual Layer Drive .4x 8cm Case fans (blue led)
.Ricoh 52x CDRW Drive .1xBlue Cold Cathode
.Emermax Verre Silver Midi ATX case .Custom front fan/light/InfraRed control panel
.Yamaha 2.1 Speaker system .Logitech Wireless keyboard/mouse
.Digimate 17" TFT monitor .Hauppage PVR 350 TV capture card

Well there's the specs, as you can see it's a pretty powerful system thanks to the Athlon 64 cpu and Asus motherboard. I would never touch Intel again I think as they are vastly overpriced and not nearly as fast as Amd for the same money.

Sys-Man v1: I designed the front control panel to allow me to turn on/off various devices in the system without having to go behind the tower to find the switches. It allows me to control the amount of fans on in the system (2 permanently on and 2 optional), the cold cathode light on/off/sound act and houses the Hauppage TV tuner IR remote sensor.

Tips:

Asus A8V deluxe - Upgrade to the latest bios if you haven't done already as this cured most of the problems I had intially. Also if you find graphics in games stuttering, them go into bios and limit the ram speed to 266 and overclock the fsb to 250 or so. This brings the speed back up to ddr400 and also overclocks the cpu by 400mhz. The cpu stills runs at the same temperature but you gain more speed! (3000+, 1.8ghz normal, now 2.2ghz! (3400+ speed). I know this sounds quite high but trust me, it works! I have runs this for over 3 months now, and now have no stuttering in games and no crashes!

This is one fantastic Laptop, I can play UT2004 and Halflife2 at a decent frame rate. Video editing is no problem thanks to the power of the processor. The only thing I could knock it on is the battery life at 1:50 Hours, its not the best for on the move but doesn't effect me as its plugged in most of the time.

This laptop has given me absouletly no problems whatsoever (never crashed! ever!). Fujitsu siemens stuff seems to pretty well designed and fairly solid. For the price I paid (£699, comet), you really can't knock it!

Also another thing I love about this laptop/processor is the powernow! feature, When the laptop senses its under load/rest it automatically adjust the processor speed to maximise battery life and responsivness. The cpu fan is also adjusted to match.

Tips:

The laptop initially came with 512Mb ram. It took me quite awhile to find out where the ram bays were in this laptop. I eventually found them under the keyboard. You need carefully prise off the black button strip from the top of the laptop (about 6 clips) and then slide the keyboard backwards towards the screen to release it. Don't disconnect the keyboard, just move it one side. You'll find 2 silver plates and the ram sits under this. 2 screws release the covers. The ram is 2x256mb, so you'll need to buy 2x512mb to get 1gb (max this can take). Get corsair value select if you can as its decent stuff. I did read up before hand to see if this would invalidate the warranty and it doesn't thankfully!

Also intially if you find the sound sometimes skips, just upgrade to the latest realtek ALC driver, and its sorted.

*I've just seen that they have uprated the laptop and now include a glass type screen and a 100Gb Hd!

Update - I now run Linux, specifically PCLinux 2008, on both my systems and love it! Flying round in a 3D desktop, bliss... Vista, Eat this!
